Drying Time

When developing a process, it is important to know the exact time it takes for the coating to dry or cure. There are many stages to the coating drying time.

Once a coating has been applied, the first stage is that the coating levels off under gravity. Once a coating begins to cure, a thin dry film appears on the surface .

But how to know when a coating is totally dry?
Using the Qualtech Drying Time Recorder, the operator can easily identify each of the stages of the drying processï¼ÂÂ
A ball tip is placed into the coating and, using the mathematical formulaï¼ÂÂ Distance=Speed ×Time ï¼ÂÂ the Recorder begins to move this ball at a predefined speed.

As the coating dries, the trace left in the coating by the ball identifies each stage of the cure.

The various stages of drying and curing that occur in films are easy to detect but difficult to define
in terms of chemical and physical principles. In order to evaluate them satisfactory, it is necessary to
use instrumentation under controlled conditions.

This reliable apparatus to test the drying time or gelatin behavior of many paints and coatings,
applied onto a glass strip of 300 .25mmï¼Â12”.1”ï¼Â by means of our cube applicatorï¼Âmodel CAAPï¼Â.Hemispherical needles travel on these test tracks, over a selected timeï¼Â6, 12 or 24 h.
The drying time stages can be easily assessed with the graduation scaleï¼Âaccording to traverse
speed configurationï¼Âï¼Â
1. evaporation of solventï¼Â deep pear-shaped impression
2. sol-gel transitionï¼Â continuous track
3. surface dryï¼Â interrupted track
Procedure
–-Coat the glass strip using QT 203 film applicator ï¼Âorder separately belowï¼Â
--The drying of the paint starts here. If you prepare multiple panels at different times, note the time
when the draw down was made and add it to the time the sample is in the recorder
--Place recorder bridge in starting position and put the strip in place
--Place needles on the sample strip and select the speed by adjusting the speed switch
--Turn the recorder on – the unit will automatically switch off at the end of the test
--Evaluate the results
