LDPE scrap is a thermoplastic obtained from petroleum. It is a semi-rigid, translucent polymer with a density ranging from 0.910 to 0.930 g/cm³. The LDPE film structure consists of bundled polymer chains arranged in an irregular pattern, giving it excellent flexibility. It can be used in temperatures between −50 °C and 80 °C, with a melting point of approximately 120 °C.

Impact of Gamma Radiation on LDPE film

The effect of gamma radiation (doses ranging from 5 to 60 kGy) on the thermal, mechanical, and permeation properties, as well as on the IR spectra of experimental five-layer food packaging films, has been studied. These films contain a middle buried layer of recycled LDPE, comprising 25–50% by weight of the multilayer structure. Representative films containing 100% virgin LDPE as the buried layer were used as controls.

Findings

Results showed that the percentage of recycled LDPE in the multilayer structure did not significantly affect the melting temperature, tensile strength, percent elongation at break, Young's modulus, or the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor transmission rates. The IR spectra of both non-irradiated and irradiated multilayer films also remained largely unchanged.

Irradiation, particularly at the higher dose of 60 kGy, induced small but statistically significant differences in the mechanical properties of the multilayer films, regardless of whether they contained a recycled LDPE layer. However, no significant differences were observed in the thermal properties or in the gas and water vapor permeability of the multilayer films.
