It is an inter-wall heat exchanger with the wall surface of the tube bundle enclosed in the shell as the heat transfer surface. This heat exchanger structure is simple, reliable operation, can be made of various structural materials (mainly metal materials), can be used in high temperature, high pressure, is the most widely used type.

Shell and tube heat exchanger is composed of shell, heat transfer tube bundle, tube plate, baffle plate and tube box. The shell is mostly cylindrical, and the interior is equipped with a tube bundle, and the two ends of the tube bundle are fixed on the tube plate. There are two kinds of fluids for heat exchange, one is flowing in the pipe, called pipe flow fluid; The other flows outside the tube and is called shell flow. In order to improve the heat transfer coefficient of the fluid outside the tube, a number of baffles are usually installed in the shell. The baffle can increase the velocity of the fluid on the shell side, force the fluid to pass through the tube bundle multiple times according to the specified route, and enhance the degree of fluid turbulence. The heat exchange tubes can be arranged in an equilateral triangle or square on the tube plate. The equilateral triangle arrangement is compact, the fluid turbulence outside the tube is high, and the heat transfer coefficient is large. The square arrangement is convenient for cleaning outside the tube and suitable for the fluid that is easy to scale. Each time the fluid passes through the tube bundle is called a tube course. Each pass through the shell is called a shell journey. The diagram shows the simplest single shell and single tube heat exchanger, referred to as the 1-1 type heat exchanger. In order to improve the fluid speed in the tube, a separator can be set in the two ends of the tube box to divide all the tubes into several groups. In this way, the fluid passes through only part of the tube at a time and thus makes multiple round-trips through the tube bundle, which is called multi-tube travel. Similarly, in order to improve the flow velocity outside the tube, longitudinal baffles can also be installed in the shell to force the fluid to pass through the shell space multiple times, which is called multi-shell pass. Multi-tube and multi-shell can be used together.
