Lysozyme is an antibacterial enzyme that occurs naturally in tissues and secretions: mucus, tears, milk, and egg-white.

It is capable of destroying the cell walls of certain bacteria and acts as a mild antiseptic.

Lysozyme is widely used in food industry, livestock farming, and medical field as a replacement of antibiotics.

Liquid form : 50,000,000 units/L

Powder form : 50,000,000 units/kg

Functions

1. Antibacterial activity

Lysozyme targets the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls, hydrolyzing the β-(1-4) glycosidic bond between N-acetyl muramic acid and N-acetyl glucosamine.

· In addition, its hydrolysis products are capable of enhancing IgA secretion, macrophage activation, and rapid clearance of bacterial pathogens.

2. Antiviral activity

· Lysozyme has antiviral activity associated with its charge, rather than with its lytic activity.

· Oral and topical applications of Lysozyme have been reported to prevent and control various viral skin diseases, including herpes simplex and chickenpox, and HIV type I.

3. Anti-inflammatory activity

· Lysozyme has anti-inflammatory activity by combining with negatively charged substances that can induce the inflammatory response.

· Lysozyme has a synergic effect with other drugs to promote the anti-inflammatory response and the recovery of infected tissues.
